Description

In this workshop, we will explore with participants the realities of what it’s like being womxn and non-binary in STEM, focussing on information specific to the Canadian context. We will draw inspiration from our Community Discussion on Gender Bias in STEM (held in February 2022), to highlight themes such as current gender gaps across career levels and systemic barriers womxn and non-binary folks face in STEM. Together, we will explore techniques we can all use to alleviate these issues and foster empowerment on campus and in our own classrooms and labs to foster greater gender equity in our disciplines. In our Workshop, participants will: 1.Identify and discuss specific ways in which womxn-identifying and non-binary folks in STEM are affected by gender bias throughout their academic careers. 2.Become familiar with techniques that have been proven to enhance the learning environment at both the university and classroom level for womxn and non-binary folks in STEM.3.Become knowledgeable of specific strategies to utilize in the development of course syllabi to increase engagement among womxn and non-binary folks in STEM.We believe that this workshop will be beneficial for all genders to attend, since it is our shared responsibility to foster greater gender equity in the classroom, and so we welcome all genders to participate.
