A key task of instructors is the creation of assignments that assess student learning. Meaningful assignments go beyond merely coming up with grades. Meaninful assignments provide feedback to both parties: students may see how they are doing and get ideas on what to improve on, and instructors can see what their students are struggling with and how to adjust their teaching. Meaningful assignments need to be embedded into the course and be clearly linked to the overall course goal. In this workshop you will

1. discuss traits of a “good” assignment,
2. consider assignments within the larger context of a course, and
3. design your own assignment.

You may bring along a draft assignment you wish to improve, and any questions you may have.
