Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation, 130 St. George Street, Robarts Library, 4th floor
We encourage participants from across the humanities, social sciences and STEM disciplines to join us and engage in intra- and inter- disciplinary conversations about the socio-political contexts of our teaching and research. The impact of research extends into our global community, impacting policies, perceptions and norms. How do we situate our research within this context to consider the socio-political consequences, and to instill a critical perspective in our classrooms? An active discussion can facilitate a more profound reflection on these questions. In this workshop, we will use case studies, individual written reflection, and group discussion to explore pedagogiical strategies to address the socio-political contexts of our disciplines. By the end of this workshop, participants will practice situating their scientific discipline within a broader socio-scientific context using relevant examples; understand the value in communicating this context to their students; and, identify ways that their teaching can address more general socio-scientific issues.
