Description

Academic integrity is often explained to undergraduate students as a potentially punitive and disciplinary policy, without necessarily explaining the University’s expectations for citation, acknowledgement, and paraphrasing. This frequently becomes an issue of student-teacher intercultural communication and creates concerns around accessibility, because cultural practices around citation vary.
This workshop, “Promoting Academic Integrity in Intercultural Classrooms,” will reframe academic integrity as an issue of accessibility. Participants will:
• learn about cultural differences around plagiarism;
• develop teaching methods for promoting academic integrity in the classroom (for instance, drawing from Indigenous learning’s Seven Grandfathers principles to teach academic integrity as a dedication to honesty and humility);
• independently reflect on how to incorporate principles of academic integrity into their teaching’s holistic structure (rather than just around assignment submissions); and
• engage in active learning exercises (small-group case study work) to develop skills for approaching students who may have unknowingly committed an academic offence, with an eye toward intercultural communication and accessibility.
