Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation, 130 St. George Street, Robarts Library, 4th floor
Do you want to offer your students additional writing support, but feel constrained by the time limits of your tutorial? Do you teach in a discipline where students are expected to write, but where there is minimal time given to writing instruction? In this workshop, we’ll explore ways to build your students’ writing capacities – and through writing, their critical thinking capacities – in the context of the time-limited tutorial. The session will provide an overview of two pedagogical philosophies that centre student writing development, “learn to write” and “write to learn.” We will consider how these approaches can support UofT’s diverse student population. TAs will have the opportunity to build their own discipline-specific writing exercise to use in their tutorial or teaching context. Finally, attendees will receive an introduction to the Writing Integrated Teaching (WIT) initiative, as well as an overview of writing-focused resources and programming available at UofT.
