Description

In what ways can you support students in setting goals to help themselves stay motivated and engaged? How can you enhance your students’ development of skills necessary to deal with adversity and challenges? Do you promote a learning environment where students can critically reflect on what and how they learn, especially the skills that they acquire? In this workshop, we take the lens of learning as leadership, which includes risk-taking, responsibility, decision-making, capacity-building (of self and others), and responsiveness to environment/changes. Using the Universal Design for Learning model’s focus on self-regulation and executive function, we will explore how cognition and emotions interact to help students become expert learners. The aim is to help students internalize their learning by acquiring skills that will help them across many different learning and work environments. We will examine strategies for appropriate goal setting, for planning and strategy development, managing learning by accessing resources and supports, and effectively monitoring progress. We will also examine ways to help students when they get stuck, when their emotions impact their learning, and when they have trouble effectively leveraging feedback or engaging in self-assessment.
