The ability to understand experimental and observational data is essential for the evolution of scientific knowledge in academia and in our communities. However, a student’s ability to interpret and critically engage with data requires deliberate training, improving as one progresses through their academic career. The central topic for this workshop will be improving undergraduate students’ abilities to interpret and visualize data accurately and critically. We will present and discuss evidence of the effectiveness of active learning activities in data interpretation and visualization across a range of disciplines.
By the end of this workshop, you will be better able to:
• Recognize challenges to data interpretation that are unique to undergraduate students
• Explain to future students how to assess and accurately interpret data via experiential learning activities
• Lead undergraduate students through a data visualization activity using Tableau
