Description

In this Community Discussion, we will create a space for individuals that self-identify as womxn or non-binary to share their experiences as students, teachers, and researchers in STEM at the University of Toronto. Our goal of this session is to provide womxn-identifying and non-binary folks in the STEM community an opportunity to interact with other individuals outside of their specific discipline to acknowledge the number of issues we face. This smaller session will be different from a regular workshop, in that it will rely on participants to share their own experiences. In our Community Discussion, participants will:1.Identify and discuss specific ways in which womxn-identifying and non-binary folks in STEM are affected by gender bias throughout their academic careers. 2.Comfortably share personal experiences of imposter syndrome and microaggressions in the classroom as womxn and non-binary in STEM.3.Recognize themselves as part of a larger community of womxn and non-binary folks in STEM at the University of Toronto. To create a safe space for sharing, you are welcome to attend only if you identify as womxn or non-binary. If you are interested in the topic and want to learn what you can do to foster greater gender equity in your classroom, consider attending our workshop in March titled Promoting Gender Diversity in STEM, which will be open to all genders.
