Participants in this workshop will gain a set of useful tools for promoting students’ accurate understanding of academic dishonesty and, even more important, for cultivating academic integrity. The workshop focuses on discussion and further development of classroom activities that can be used to help undergraduates understand the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters, practice proper paraphrasing and citation, and develop time management skills that will head off the problems that may result in academic offences. Topics include TAs’ roles in detecting academic offences (using tools such as Turnitin), and the procedural guidelines for making an allegation. Furthermore, we will discuss how to provide clarity on common undergraduate misunderstandings of collaboration (group work), “self-plagiarism,” paraphrasing, citation practice, use of web resources, and giving appropriate credit for images and multimedia. Through scenarios that bring out common problems, participants will discuss ways to enhance both TAs’ and undergraduates’ understanding of, and commitment to, the values of academic integrity.

This workshop is part of UTSC’s annual teaching-focused event, the Celebration of Teaching and Faculty Showcase. TAs and graduate students who participate in this session are invited to attend other parts of the Teaching Showcase, including the keynote address, lunch and a concluding reception/poster session. This free event is a great time to network with faculty, or simply to mingle with your graduate student colleagues at a nice lunch (before the academic integrity workshop) or reception (after the workshop).

If you’d like to attend any other parts of the Teaching Showcase beyond the 1:00 – 3:15 workshop, you must also register for the Teaching Showcase at https://ctl.utsc.utoronto.ca/ctl-event-registration/register.php?sessionID=576&type=faculty. Registering for the Showcase reserves your place at lunch and the reception/poster session. The academic integrity workshop is a concurrent event that is only open to graduate students. You may also benefit from attending the keynote speaker’s session before lunch.
