Active learning is when “students make information or concepts their own by connecting them to existing knowledge and experience… examine, question, and relate new ideas to old, thereby achieving the kind of deep learning that lasts” (Barkley, 2010). Research suggests that, when engaged in an active learning environment, students are able to retain information longer (Waldrop, 2015) and find the work more personally rewarding (Braxton et al., 2008). With this context in mind, our workshop will explore theory behind active learning, examine various active-learning strategies, and provide participants with an opportunity to apply both theory and strategies to their own classroom. We will discuss how these strategies can be applied across disciplines and in various classroom contexts, whether in-person or online.
