Science communication occurs largely through the written word (journals, reviews and book chapters), yet skill development toward effective critical reading is lacking in formal science education and is outside of the scope of learning in most science courses. Enhanced critical reading skills can improve the learning experience for both students and teachers in the sciences where technical reading imposes unique challenges in fields that rely heavily on written communication. In this 2-hour workshop we will explore, synthesize and implement critical reading strategies to integrate into your tutorials. We will examine the foundations of critical reading and apply techniques and strategies to implement tools that help improve your students’ critical reading skills. By the end of this workshop you should be able to identify a reading strategy to implement in different learning contexts/assignments/tasks in your courses and you will be able to apply or integrate the tools provided to your specific teaching settings.
